It was originally established as New Prospect in 1859 and later renamed Bolivar in 1861, inspired by a farmer from Bolivar, Tennessee. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 40 in 2000. The town's historical significance includes its role as a stopping point for cattle drives and its proximity to the Chisholm Trail.

Bolivar is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and is situated at the intersection of Farm Roads 2450 and 455, approximately 14 miles northwest of Denton. Despite its small size, Bolivar has a rich history and a rural charm, maintaining a close-knit community atmosphere.
