The town was incorporated in October 1960 to avoid annexation by Denton. As of the 2020 Census, Shady Shores has a population of approximately 2,940 residents. The town covers an area of about 3.1 square miles and is known for its quiet, rural atmosphere without traffic lights or convenience stores.

The town's history dates back to the mid-1920s when John William Franck, a Dallas contractor, built a fishing camp on the northern shores of Lake Dallas. This area eventually developed into the Shady Shores subdivision in the 1930s, leading to the town's incorporation in 1960.
